Worship
Worship is an important, even serious part of the services at Waltham
Evangelical Free Church. It is serious not in the sense that it prevents
worshipers from experiencing joy and pleasure in it, but serious in that it is
not entered into casually.
The worship
portion of our services are designed and led with a keen awareness of its
purpose in the Christian life as well as being mindful of the attitude we should
have in undertaking it. Though one can point to different reasons for and
benefits of worship, its overriding purpose is to bring glory and honor to God.
Isaiah 42:8 says “I am the LORD; that is my name! I will not give my glory to
another or my praise to idols.” To the extent that worship lacks this purpose,
or diverts glory from God to us, we are displeasing the Lord. During worship,
the focus of both leaders and congregation should remain firmly fixed on God and
His perfections.
Our
attitude, as well, needs to be properly influenced by an understanding of the
God we worship. Pride or vanity over our accomplishments or skills have no place
before the God who gave us all we have. The only proper attitude in the presence
of our creator, sustainer, savior, and lord is humility and submission. David
says in Psalm 51 “The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and
contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.” We strive, with God’s help, to
make that true of us.
The
style of worship at Waltham, besides being Christ focused, can be described as a
mix. There is a fairly even split between the good old hymns of the faith and
newer praise choruses. They are accompanied by a combination of piano, acoustic
guitar, and flute. We also occasionally have special music that ranges from
soloists to classical guitar. Though liturgical forms of worship don’t occupy
a large portion of our services, we periodically include responsive reading from
scripture.
